Douc Langur Foundation Last Update: 2/28/08 |
About DoucsDouc langurs are endangered colobine monkeys found in the evergreen forests of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Once thought to be rare with limited distributions, our recent fieldwork has demonstrated that small populations of Douc Langur are widely distributed and found in a variety of habitats. The red shanked Douc Langur has been located in the forests of north and central provinces of Vietnam and the central and south eastern forests of Laos. The black shanked Douc Langur is found in central and southern provinces of Vietnam and in the north eastern forests of Cambodia. The grey shanked Douc Langur a new and critically endangered form has been located in a restricted distribution in central Vietnam. While Douc Langur monkeys are entirely restricted to wooded habitats, they occur in a variety of forest types. Populations of Doucs have been located in monsoon forests as well as rainforests and their forest homes include; semi evergreen, lowland lower montane and upper montane forest types. All of these forest types are rapidly disappearing in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos as a direct result of intense logging activities which supplies hardwoods prized by the building trades for construction of houses, floors and furniture. |
